Biographical / Historical

Paul Empie (1909-1979) was born in Montgomery County, New York. Salutatorian of his high school class, he then attended Muhlenberg College where he received an A.B. degree in 1929. He graduated from The Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia in 1932. He studied at Goettingen University, Germany, taking courses in the German language.

Professional positions include Pastor in the Lutheran church, executive leadership positions in the United Lutheran Church Ministerium, Lutheran World Federation, Lutheran World Action, and other Lutheran organizations.

At Muhlenberg College, he was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1965-1972 and its chair from 1972-1979. He was instrumental in the construction of the Center for the Arts, and in 1982, the theatre was named in his honor. His many publications include the well-known “The Lutherans and Catholics in Dialogue”, 1961.

Honorary degrees: Muhlenberg College D.D., Capital University Litt.D., Hartwick College L.H.D., Gustavus Adolphus College D.D., Goettingen University Honorary ThD., Augustana College D.D. He received many other prestigious awards as well.
