Alcoa Foundation gives Muhlenberg grants ranging from $500 - $800 (1956-1960); du Pont Company grants $4,000 a year 1957-1962 ($2,500 to chemistry dept. and $1,500 to college);Esso Education Foundation (Shell) grants of $2000 and $1,500 for 1956-1960; Ford Foundation grant to college of $226,500 (1957); college receives $1850 Research Corporation grant for chemistry department 1954; Dr. Smart receives $7,000 grant from National Science Foundation 1962, renewed 1963; Gifts of about $300.00 each year given to college by Gulf Oil Corporation 1959-1960;
