These five mid-twentieth-century, disbound scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, brochure clippings, and concert program clippings about arts, culture, and style pertaining to Allentown, New York, and Philadelphia.

Biographical / Historical

Berthold Wavrek (1906-1968) was born in Fullerton to parents Tannie and John Wavrek. His father John sang with the Arion Society and Handel and Haydn Society and was an gifted violinist. Berthold, who was an accomplished flautist, trained with Albert Bode of Paris Conservatory. He joined the Allentown Band at age 13, and at the time of his death he had appeared as a soloist for the Allentown Band more than any other member. In 1927, he became the youngest member of Sousa’s Band. He also performed with the Lehigh Valley Symphony, Allentown Symphony Orchestra, and Bach Choir Orchestra. Additionally, he performed with his brother, Paul (cello) and Dorothy Knauss (harp) in a group called the Knauss-Wavrek Trio, and was a flute and piccolo instructor at the Kramer school of music.
